July 2026 | Our summer weekend in Tampere had plenty packed into just 1.5 days.
The itinerary included Lempäälä Housing Fair (Asuntomessut), dinner at Restaurant Kajo, a night at Lapland Hotels and the Game On summer exhibition.
By the time we arrived at Kajo, we were ready to slow down. A warm welcome set the tone, and from the very first amuse-bouche, we were hooked.
The Dining Experience
Course after course introduced unique flavour combinations and fresh interpretations of familiar ingredients. Every dish felt thoughtfully composed, with plenty of little details that made each plate memorable.
We were penny-pinching a little and skipped the caviar with the halibut. Of course, these are exactly the kind of decisions that make you second-guess yourself afterwards. The dish was excellent without it, but the caviar would surely have added another layer. Maybe next time.
The portions weren’t particularly large, but with so many courses arriving one after another, we left feeling perfectly satisfied and comfortably full, without the usual tasting menu coma.
Kajo is already listed in the Michelin Guide, although it hasn’t received a star – yet. Based on our dinner, that feels a little unfair.
We sometimes wonder how much geography plays a part in these things. Finland has several restaurants that, to us, feel every bit as deserving of a Michelin star as places we’ve visited elsewhere in Europe.
For now, we’ll just say this: if you’re looking for fine dining in Tampere, Kajo is an easy restaurant to recommend, especially if you enjoy tasting menus that play with unexpected flavours and wine pairings.

Something We Will Remember
Pairing white vermouth with one of the dishes was an unexpected highlight. It was one of those combinations we’d never have thought to try ourselves, yet it worked beautifully.
Side Quest
If you feel like continuing the evening after dinner, pop into the wine bar next door, Villit ja Viinit (Wild and Wine). They serve some dishes too, so if Kajo is fully booked, you might still find something intriguing to eat here.
