September 2026 | Summer had turned into autumn when we stopped at TeaHouse of Wehmais for a quick lunch on our way to one of the last weekends at the summer cottage before the winter break.

Set in the courtyard of historic Wehmaa Manor in Juva, TeaHouse of Wehmais is part tea room, part restaurant and part tea shop, with a working organic dairy farm right outside the door. It is the kind of combination that perhaps should feel slightly odd, yet somehow makes perfect sense once you are there.

And despite the name, this is not just somewhere to get a cup of tea.

Parking

There are two small parking areas on the premises. The first is just after you enter the farmyard and has room for roughly ten cars. Another parking area is closer to the TeaHouse entrance.

During the busiest summer days, we would probably take the first available space rather than circle the yard looking for something closer. On our autumn visit, however, there was plenty of room right next to the building.

Once you have parked, don’t head straight inside. Take a moment to look around the farmyard first.

Wehmaa Manor is still a working organic dairy farm, and particularly in summer you may spot cows and chickens around the estate. Depending on when you visit, you may even get to watch modern dairy farming in action. The cows use automated milking stations on their own, quite literally queuing up for their turn whenever they feel like being milked.

Food

TeaHouse of Wehmais has taken several different approaches to food over the years.

At its most ambitious, it has offered multi-course menus where tea has been treated much like wine, with individual teas carefully selected to accompany different dishes. Its founder, Anna Grotenfelt-Paunonen, is also a trained tea sommelier, so tea here is far more than something served alongside the food.

The offering in 2026 is somewhat lighter. Depending on the season and opening days, you might find Cream Tea with scones, Afternoon Tea and a changing lunch menu.

We arrived for lunch, which meant something much simpler than a tasting menu: a bowl of the week’s lunch soup, with a tea of our choice from the TeaHouse selection included in the price.

That small detail makes even a quick lunch feel unmistakably like TeaHouse of Wehmais. You do not need to book a full Afternoon Tea to experience what the place is about.

Shopping

The shop is dangerously conveniently placed in the same building as the restaurant.

There is a generous selection of loose-leaf teas, ranging from familiar black, green and white teas to flavoured blends and somewhat less familiar varieties. You will also find tea accessories and a selection of edible souvenirs, including products from TeaHouse’s own kitchen and other local producers.

If, like us, your tea cupboard already contains more varieties than any reasonable household actually needs, you won’t leave the shop empty-handed.

But consider yourself warned.

Good to Know

  • Opening hours vary considerably by season, so check them before making the trip.
  • Table reservations are recommended, particularly during busy periods and for special events.
  • Afternoon Tea should be booked in advance.
  • The tea shop is in the same building as the restaurant, so stopping by does not necessarily have to involve a full meal.

Something We Will Remember

The two worlds colliding. From the classic Finnish farmyard to the fine dining table. The contrast is striking, yet somehow completely harmonious.

Perhaps that is why we keep coming back.

Side Quest

If TeaHouse leaves you wanting to explore the area a little further, PihlasResort is about 20 kilometres away in Joroinen and belongs to the same group.

We haven’t spent the night at PihlasResort ourselves, so we cannot say anything about the accommodation. We have, however, stopped there for lunch, and that we can recommend from experience.

The food at Restaurant Siimes takes another step towards fine dining compared with TeaHouse, and the resort itself made an immediately polished impression. Surrounded by forest and lake scenery, it certainly looked like the kind of place where staying for the night could be worth trying.
